| Tablea Processing/Choco Best | Barangay Magkiangkang is known to be one of the many growers and sellers of native cacao beans in Agusan del Sur. Blessed with good climate and fertile soil, the people residing here are mostly backyard farmers who are into vegetable, flowers, fruit trees such as banana and coconut, falcata and cacao farming. Having known for the availability of cacao beans and its nutritional benefits, the officials and members of Magkiangkang Multi-Purpose Cooperative decided to further process their cacao beans to native chocolate or tablea as we commonly call it. Tablea is made from the beans of a plant called Theobroma cacao or commonly called as cacao. It is a small evergreen tree that is twelve (12) to twenty five (25) feet high. It is grown primarily for its beans, which are processed into cocoa powder, cake and butter. The beans are numerous, compressed, one (1) inch long, reddish-brown externally, dark-brown internally, and imbedded in a whitish, sweetish, buttery pulp. Tablea which is dark brown in color is a compact form of cocoa powder molded into different shapes of heart, squares and triangle. It is packed at 150 and 250 grams and is sold at Php 40.00 and Php 60.00 respectively. Tablea, when scraped into a coarse powder, and boiled in milk, or milk and water, is much used as an occasional substitute for coffee, and for a drink at meals. It is also used as flavoring and as an ingredient of beverages and various kinds of confectionary. Tablea, as well as being a pleasure to eat and drink, have a food value. It contains fats in the form of cocoa butter that provides a source of energy, proteins which have a value as body builders and carbohydrates in the form of sugars provides a source of quickly available energy. Moreover, recent studies have shown that minimally processed cocoa contains flavonoids similar to those found in green tea. It has been linked to help decrease blood pressure, improve circulation, lower death rate from heart disease and has been used to treat patients with anemia, kidney stones and poor appetite. | For inquiries please contact the following;
